Some six tonnes of steel were melted by manufacturer and Paris 2024 official partner ArcelorMittal to make the 2,000 torches for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The torch was produced at the Normandy factory of French silverware and cutlery company Guy Degrenne, where the metal was laser-cut, welded and assembled by a couple of dozen workers in a nine-month process that ended last January. The result is a slender-looking torch, with a wavy touch in echo to the journey of the flame through the Mediterranean sea and oceans from Greece and the French overseas territories. Some 1,500 torches will be used for the Olympics relay, with the other 500 going to the Paralympics' relay. There will be 11,000 torch bearers to bring the flame on a relay around 60 towns, towards its final destination in Paris. The torch, which weighs 1.5 kilos for a 70-cm height, is water and windproof as it is designed so that the flame can withstand a sustained wind of 20kph with gusts at 60kph. The flame was lit in anci
